Finally, Android 5.0 Lollipop has started to roll for owners of the newer Xperia Z series, however the limiting factor is that it is currently only available in select regions. For those that don’t have the patience for it to arrive in their region we’ve created a quick guide on how to download and install the Lollipop update to your Sony Xperia device. The process will be familiar to long-term readers of the blog and essentially if you’ve read one of our various in the past, along with our on how to create a FTF firmware file then you’re pretty much there. However, after numerous requests we’ve decided to provide step-by-step instructions for those new to Xperia devices. Installing Xperia Lollipop using XperiFirm and Flashtool [TUTORIAL] Disclaimer: Please read the following instructions thoroughly before attempting to flash your phone. Xperia Blog absolves itself from any responsibility should something go wrong. Please proceed with caution and at your own risk.

Note: You do NOT need an unlocked bootloader or root for you to flash your handset. Warranty will NOT be voided if you flash new firmware to your handset. It is recommended that you create a backup of your existing regional/carrier firmware just in case you need to send your device back for repair. This guide can be used to create any firmware file, so to create a backup just follow the instructions below with the relevant firmware build.

Preparation 1) Enable ‘USB debugging’ on your handset: Settings >Developer options 2) Enable ‘Unknown sources’ on your handset: Settings >Security 3) Install drivers for your Xperia handset: You need to ensure that your PC has all of the necessary drivers installed for your Sony Xperia. The best way to do this is to install PC Companion. Make sure you connect your Xperia to the PC before starting the process to download the necessary USB and ADB drivers. If you have any problems you will find the necessary drivers (once you have installed Flashtool) in the following location: ‘C: Flashtool drivers’. XperiFirm steps First step is to download. Follow the instructions in that link to install.

Once installed you will see the program below. Navigate to your handset on the left pane. You can then choose the firmware for your region/carrier in the middle pane. The pane on the right side will show you which firmware is available for that region. Click on it to download the file.

Important: Only download firmware for your model and variant number. For example, if you own a Xperia Z3 (D6603), only browse and download the firmware builds listed under D6603. Once clicked, you are asked to confirm whether you want to download the firmware.

Ensure that “Unpack automatically” is ticked and then click “Download” to proceed. Choose any folder as a location to download the new firmware. The firmware will now start downloading. Once complete, you will see the following pop message “Unpacked Successfully!” Click OK. The same “Unpacked successfully!” message will appear on the download dialog. Click “Close”. Check your download location and you will find a new folder that contains your firmware files.

Inside the folder, you should find a number of files that look similar to the below. NOTE: If your list of files includes “fwinfo.xml” as highlighted below then manually delete it before continuing to the FlashTool steps. You MUST delete this file otherwise your FTF firmware file will corrupt. That is the XperiFirm part of the tutorial complete. You now have the necessary files to create your FTF firmware file to flash your handset using Flashtool. FlashTool steps Download and install.

Note: To install the Flashtool drivers for Windows 8/Windows 8.1, please follow the steps below. 1) Press the Windows key + R and in the run box type: shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00 – Now make the following selections to boot into the Start Up Setting Screen: Troubleshoot >Advanced options >Start Up Settings >Restart – Then, when the machine restarts, select number 7 i.e.

“Disable driver signature enforcement”. Your machine will start with Driver signing enforcement disabled until the next reboot. 2) Now you can install the Flashtool drivers. – Windows will warn that the driver is not signed and will require you to confirm the installation.

– Once the installation is complete, reboot the machine Once you launch the program, you should see something similar to the below. Navigate to Tools >Bundles >Create.

A new pop-up called “Bundler” will appear. Click on the three dots next to “Select source folder.” Now choose the folder where your firmware files are located and click “OK”. The bottom “folder list” of the Bundler should now include all of the firmware files. Now double-click in the “Device” space to input the Xperia smartphone or tablet that you want to flash.

Once you choose your device, you will then be prompted to choose the variant. If you don’t know your variant, go to your Xperia device and click ‘Settings >About phone’ and look under “Model number”. Note: If your device is not listed in the dialog then fear not. As long as the FTF firmware bundle you are creating includes the loader.sin file, then it can be flashed.

The “Device Selector” is used to identify a device only if the FTF bundle does not include the loader.sin file. If the loader.sin file is included then the “Device Selector” is used for naming purposes only and does not affect the flashing of the file. So, for example, if you have a Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact (which is not listed in Flashtool at the time of publication) you could select any device and variant in the list and the FTF firmware file can still be flashed (as long as the loader.sin file is included in the bundle, which is what we recommend below anyway). Now input the branding and firmware version number into the appropriate boxes. You should know these details from the actual firmware you downloaded from XperiFirm earlier. Highlight all of the files in the “folder list” and click the right arrow to move them all into the “Firmware content” frame. Click “Create”.

Flashtool will now start creating your FTF firmware file. You should see a progress bar as seen below. Once your FTF firmware file has been compiled you will see the following message. To ensure the FTF firmware file has been created, you can navigate to the following location on your PC: “ C: Users [Your PC Name].flashTool firmwares” Now that the FTF firmware file has been created, you need to flash your Sony Xperia device. Click on the lightning bolt in the top left of Flashtool to “Flash device”. Select “Flashmode” and click “OK”. Select the firmware build version that you want to flash from the “Firmware” pane.

If you want to retain your apps/data, untick “DATA” in the “Wipe” pane. Then click “Flash”. Flashtool will then indicate that it is “preparing files for flashing”. You may have to wait around 60 seconds for the pop-up below to appear. Once it does, you should now connect your Sony Xperia device.

Make sure the device is powered off and then hold the ‘volume down’ button whilst connecting the USB cable. Once the pop-up disappears and flashing has started, you can let go of the ‘volume down’ button. NOTE: Ignore the instructions displayed which says “press the back button” – these relate to the older Sony Ericsson Xperia handsets. Flashtool will then start flashing your Xperia device. Once you see “Flashing finished” as indicated below, your Sony Xperia has been successfully flashed. Congratulations you have just installed Android Lollipop! Now disconnect your Xperia device and power on the handset.

Don’t despair if it takes a while for the handset to boot. Tagged as:,,. @XperiaBlog:disqus What _IMPACTFUL_ customisations would the various providers actually make? I’m specifically asking about Vodacom in South Africa. I know that they show their logo on bootup (which, while being extremely minor, irritates me very much) and preloads the phone with some bloatware offering me use of their services like cloud storage, contact backup and the like. Surely the cellular providers don’t make optimisations so that the phone will connect better on their network because the GSM, 3G and LTE standards are precisely that: standards that providers *HAVE TO* follow?

Thank you Andrew •. Paul, 1.When someone flashed other regions’ firmware, absolutely nothing will happen, except that you now have a phone with corresponding OS that you flashed, it is, for the general public, just the same compared to the case that you updated via oc companion or OTA. No it won’t cause network issues, except that 1. You flashed LTE fw on 3G phone or vice versa, 2.you have branded firmwares and you try to overwrite it, the latter case you are likely to run into trouble. Yes you will end up with useless apps if you flashed a different regions’ fw. But they cause no harm. I instal drivers and nothing. I know it’s off-topic, but I’m new here and I don’t know where else to post; and this thread is about installation. I’d appreciate it if someone could tell me why can’t I install the original Backup & Restore and Notes apks form my Z Ultra on my Z3?

I did allow install from unknown sources, and I copied those apks from my own Z Ultra. Is root necessary for this? I’d rather not root my device. (The new Backup & Restore app is pretty useless compared to the old one, and Sony no longer included the Notes app that I really liked. The replacement apps I bought for these, that I’m currently using, aren’t as good that the ones Sony gave us on the Z Ultra.) Thanks in advance. The provider specific firmwares usually just contain extra bloatware and branding customizations. Everything else should function the same.

There’s plenty of generic firmwares in XperiFirm you can try without all the customizations. First thing I did with my z3c was flash it with a generic firmware and remove the super annoying Vodacom splash and bloatware. There are also relatively simple ways to disable the misc Sony add-ons like the quick settings and small apps to get a closer to vanilla/aosp experience without rooting/unlocking the device. Thanks for the reply. I don’t understand though. An app is an app. Both my phones are Sony Xperia Z series running the same Android version; one being Z Ultra, the other Z3.

I can see that a different firmware could break the phone, but I’m talking about an app that was still available on the Z1, and I believe on the Z2 also. These are third party apps that Sony bundled with the phone, the only thing I can think of is that they have DRM. I wasn’t trying to give them away, I was trying to install them on the same version of Android on my own account, and on a Sony Z-series phone. The new version of the app has now been posted to the google playstore, but it is a slimmed-down version, and it no longer backs up apps and their data, which the previous version did. Okay great 2.

I didn’t wipe anything after the flash, the phone was clear but i hadn’t wiped anything however after the flash i used the PC companion to re install the software. Would i still need to wipe data after that to clear any bugs? 3.The only piece of evidence i have is that on Kit Kat version 4.4.2 The battery lasted about 20mins on 100% but on the 4.4.4 version and on lollipop it only lasts about 5 at max and i know this isnt a battery calibration issue as i know someone who has the same issue and they have gone through the battery calibration steps •. It works, thank you so much. I flashed my Z3 D6653 using the Nordic Combined D6603 Firmware. It works out really great.

I flashed them all without any issues. Even though using the bundler, I changed the market into “Indonesia” which is different from the original “Nordic Combined” market name. Once it’s all done, I checked my about phone and it shows that mine’s a D6603 now. Lol, but network and WiFi all working smoothly.

Thank you for this tutorial. Let’s hope there’s no performance issues involved. Yep, I did it when I got xperia J in 2013 – performance was really awful and cyanogenmod was my only choice despite of loss of guarantee. But this time I’m just wondering how long does it take to roll out update for other regions? I’m not gonna risk my guarantee second time or playing with Xperifirm and flashtool (yes, I know it does not breach guarantee), because e3 runs well – just I think about some annoying bugs in my phone and endless waiting for update whis is actually rolled is riddicolous xD •.

I have followed exactly the steps were given above and came till creating FTF firmware/bundle and began to create the file but on the exact level of ” Adding emmc_appsboot_S1_Boot_MSM8974AC_LA3_0_L_15_AID_4_PLATFORM” procedure stops and nothing happens after. I’ve tried three different computers and 3 different Windows Systems (xp, 7, 8) yet no difference.

Is there anything I’m skipping or there is a problem with the file I’ve downloaded with XperiFirm. I thought maybe I have to wait more than 30 minutes (which I was able to wait that long) procedure to be completed or there may have been another problem. Could someone please enlighten me on this? Remember that this is an unofficial way to get lolli before rollout happens for your region. There is a risk of messing up your phone using flashtool if you don’t follow the guide perfectly. Honestly I would just wait for official rollout if you don’t know what you’re doing, lolli will probably come within the end of the month. Nobody ever releases such a big update globally because the load will crash the servers and if there are problems they risk messing up too many phones at once.

Although it seems this update is stable and almost bugless, unlike the lolli update I got on my Galaxy S4 which made my phone literally unusable with massive battery drains and lag all over the place, and literally no new features or apps. You guys keep complaining about sony being “late” (more like you being an entitled inpatient baby) but this update is great and brings a ton of new features. Sony is probably the best when it comes to updates. Have to say the above is an excellent tutorial, and it worked perfectly. I now have Lollipop 5.0.2 running as smoothly, if not smoother, than KK 4.4.4 was before. I should also point out that, as long as you follow carefully and un-tick the correct box during the process, it keeps your setting, folders and so on EXACTLY as they were. I thought I would get Lollipop in factory setting state, and have to reinstall a back up and put everything back to as it was manually (I probably thought this as that was the case when I used to DL leaks of Blackberry software a couple of years ago), but it wasn’t the case, thankfully.

I have one question – when (EVENTUALLY!) O2 actually release Lollipop OTA in the UK, will I get the option to update, or will this only happen when & if they push out 5.1 a variant build? Guys please help me.

I live in Sri Lanka, and yesterday i downloaded and flashed my sony xperia z3 (D6653) to android lollipop which was build for d6603 (customized baltic) using the xperifirm and flashtool. After i installed everything goes fine, device worked perfectly, but when i went to setting to see the device info, it was mentioned my phone model as d6603. But still lollipop ran ok on my device.

Then i switched off my device, and in the morning when i took my phone to start, it was hot, i wondered even i switched off how could it be so hot, phone booted and then wifi does not worked, then i realized something went wrong, and i switched off the device thinking to flash it to original kitkat version 4.4.4 build for d6653. In the evening when i came home i took the phone to flash, i tried to switch on the phone, it was completely dead, then i plugged it to the charger, and charging led indicator lit up in red color, after 15 mins time i pushed the power button to start the phone, but it does not start at all, now it’s completely dead, not booting at all, only led indicator lit up in red color and that’s all.

What went wrong, can i recover my phone, what shall i do, please help me •. I decided to flash back to KitKat for now, to get the official O2 update when it finally appears. I did everything exactly as when I flashed Lollipop, and even uninstalled/reinstalled everything, but now, when I power up the phone are flashing is complete, I’m stuck in a boot-loop.

All I get is the Sony emblem on the screen, then the Android one, and then the blue swishy screen, and then it goes blank, and it’s back to the Sony screen, and so on. Any advice pls? This is getting a bit desperate. Update on this. Decided to flash the Nordic Lollipop back again – it worked, and my phone is alive again, but the screen brightness is on full at first and then, after a few minutes, goes VERY dark, to the extnet that you almost cannot see the screen (darker than 0%, and the brightness slider no longer worked. I then deceided the flash the Baltic variant, and now the screen stays on full brightness, but, again, the slider no longer works.

I think I may just use the Sony PC companion to try and go back to where I was. It’s all got rather messy. One last update in case anyone cares (mods on here have gone awfully quiet). Kept the Baltic Lollipop build, and decided to do a factory reset from there.

Solved the ambient light sensor issue (having used a developer code from my dialler, it was clear that the phone was not recognising the fact that the AL sensor existed), and the build works nicely now. Also, I found that the new Walkman update works well – my first Lollipop flash led to the old app. Not recognising the search function to locate SD card tracks. My advice is the first do a back up, then a factory reset, then flash your chosen Lollipop build. It might even be worth doing a further factory reset one you’ve flashed, then reinstate your back up. It’s more of a pain, but I spent most of the last 2 days mucking around trying to get my Z3 functioning again.

Help I already followed the steps that XPERIABLOG made. The model D5833 is the correct one I’m on Windows 7 and the drivers are already installed correctly. What’s is wrong then? I have a small question. I used XperiFirm to flash my phone, after failing to update to Lollipop using Sony’s PC Companion and not being able to reset my phone, either. ->Phone “started” showing the Sony logo but stayed stuck. After flashing it, it worked again (I have to thank you for that). But now I have the Version 4.4.4 on my phone, I used this CDA (Telekom), because the phone card I use is from a company which is a subsidiary of Telekom.

My question: Can I flash my phone again using the “Customized DE” version and would that also be Version 5? • Pingback: () •. First Time User of this Tool;kudos to the guide/step by step instructions. This a very well thought out guide but I have a couple of comments: one the installation of FlashTool on Windows 8 involves an additional step of “moving” firmware content to where the popup instructs you too. Move means cut/paste not copy to the location otherwise it WILL NOT WORK. Secondly, the Xperi Firm download for the Xperia Z2 Tablet Verizon v.SGP561 latest release 23.0.1.E0.208 is KitKat 4.4.4 and not Lollipop 5.01. Has Lollipop for the SGP561 been released and if so can it be dowloaded for use with FlashTool?

Sony Xperia Z3 was Sony’s second flagship for 2014. All in all a great device for the time but it is no slouch today either even as it is reaching towards its 3rd year since launch. The device has also been showered love by Sony with two full version Android updates. The Xperia Z3 was also all set to receive its third full version Android upgrade to Nougat, however, thanks to some Google mess, not only the Z3 but also the Nexus 5 couldn’t officially get updated. If you’re a Z3 user, now is not very late to root your device and travel the dark side. Here we will show you how to root Sony Xperia Z3 running on the official Marshmallow firmware from Sony and install a custom recovery on the device. Prerequisites • Xperia Z3 running the official Android 6.0.x from Sony.

(.575 or.291 firmware) • • A PC • Unofficial Sony flashtool by Androxyde. If you don’t have it, you can download it from. In case you have no clue about how to set up the flashtool, follow our guide after you have downloaded it. • ADB installed. In case you don’t have ADB installed, take a look at our guide.

Must read: Disclaimer As always, you must understand the rooting process for an Android device, no matter how simple or easy, involves risks. You might end up with a bricked device, and DroidViews does not take any responsibility for it. Downloads • • • • • • (Download and transfer this to your phone) Don’t miss: Root Sony Xperia Z3 • The process described here is valid for Xperia Z3 variants – D6603, D6653, D6633, D6646 and D6643. • In case you are running the latest Marshmallow firmware, that is the.291 firmware, you will need to flash the kernel from.575 kernel. • Download the correct.575 kernel for your device. • Rename the.zip to.ftf and transfer the file to C: Users yourusername.flashTool firmwares • Click the flash icon and select flashmode. • Select the kernel from the list of flashable firmwares.

Once the kernel is flashed, click on the flash icon and select flashmode. • Select the kernel file from the displayed list and click Flash. Once the kernel is flashed, close flashtool. If you get a “loader.sin” error when flashing a kernel FTF, unplug the phone and try again. It should work after that. • Power On your phone.

• We’d suggest that at this point, you restart your PC just to make sure all instances of flashtool and the ADB interface are closed. • When your PC starts again, connect your Xperia Z3 to it again normally. • Extract the recovery tool ( Recovery_for_MM575-291v5.zip) into a separate folder. • Open the folder and double-click on install.bat • If everything goes well, your phone should soon boot into the TWRP custom recovery.

• When in the recovery, flash the SuperSU zip like any other flashable zip. • Once you’re done flashing SuperSu, don’t select Reboot System yet.

• Go back to the main TWRP menu and select Reboot>Bootloader. • Now open flashtool again. • This time flash the.291 kernel for your device also available for download above. Make sure you rename the.zip at the end to.ftf • Disconnect and reboot your device now. Hi, I don’t succeed to flash the kernel from.291 to.575. I installed fastboot, adb, the latest Androxyde Flasher.

Flashing seems to work fine (as far as I understand the log), but the Kernel stays the the same. Maybe the log can help to find the cause – anyway, I’m too dumb to understand that and need help 07/034/2017 16:34:39 – INFO – Connected device: Sony Xperia Z3 07/034/2017 16:34:39 – INFO – Installed version of busybox: N/A 07/034/2017 16:34:39 – INFO – Android version: 6.0.1 / kernel version: 3.4.
